I wonder how much of this also has to do with the hush hush patching of the Internet recently:

Apparently the bug would have allowed hackers to control the ENTIRE internet. Believe it or not the Internet is controlled by a surprisingly small amount of routers that are the backbone of the Net. Apparently the word is that the Internet's backbone is controlled by 14 routers so in theory a coordinated attack on these at the same time can bring down the whole Internet.

If the fix hadn't have been applied hackers could have had the potential to re-route traffic however they saw fit. Through in the iPhone and Mobile Me launches and pandemonium would no doubt have ensued. - lowededwookie

Hehe, my quote. :P

I believe Apple is telling people that their servers have crashed due to the huge numbers of people trying to download the new update at the same time, so now nobody can download it for the time being... Hopefully the servers will be back up soon.

It's amazing that the iPhone (and iPod Touch) has been able to create so much damage to servers globally! Vodafone's died here, O2's servers died there because 13000 users were trying to buy the iPhone online within the space on 1 second! I'm sure many other companies around the world lost theirs too, but I'm very surprised that Apple hasn't been more prepared for the mass numbers of desperate 'to-be' 2.0 users.
