Anyone thinking of changing to XT network?

No.

Personally it's because I despise Telecom in every way shape and form but also because the network is largely unproven.

Their ads do nothing to instil any confidence in me either.

I'd give it six months to see if it's actually any good or not.

Wait, so you can use an iPhone with Telecom now? Awesome! Can you do the $10 text on it now?

Sweet! As long as Safari etc work with normal WiFi (I'm pretty much always within range of one, and have never had the urge to suddenly Google something when I'm out and about).

There's no reason why apps like Safari shouldn't work on the XT network - it will just be a matter of making sure your XT sim is on a data plan, and setting the correct APN settings under "Cellular Data Network", which should be documented somewhere on Telecom's website.

Because Telecom most likely won't have a carrier settings file registered with Apple, it would mean manually changing that setting every time you swapped from a Vodafone to a Telecom sim.

At the end of the day if Telecom doesn't end up officially supporting the iPhone then for people moving permanently to Telecom it's not THAT hard to come up with a custom carrier settings file (.ipcc) for Telecom using the Vodafone one as a template and upload that to the phone, which would not only update the APN settings, but also change things like the number the voicemail button dials, etc..

Back from the Telecom shop in Takapuna, awesome helpful guy at the counter

Here's the Speed Test. iPhone 3GS 32GB.

This is in KB/sec. Kilobytes, not bits.

Bottom one is my home broadband, 192KB. Orcon won't fix my phone line, they suck. :)

4.4KB/sec is Vodafone GPRS with 5 bars around the Devonport end of Takapuna.

14.5KB/sec is Vodafone 3G at 3:30am when the network isn't busy

6.1KB/sec is at 1pm daytime in Takapuna, Vodafone 3G.

337.9KB/sec is Telecom XT at Takapuna mall.

Set up your APN like this:

Safari, maps, it all works.

You can buy a Prepay for $29.95. Comes with $10 credit, $10 more when you register.

Reception on Telecom kills Voda at my house, 1-3 bars on Voda, no 3G, 5 bars 3G on Telecom.

That's in Taka, your results may vary, but the words "F*** Vodafone" come to mind.

Wow that's amazing, 337KB/sec is about 2.6Mbit/sec which is better than I've ever seen on Vodafone.

Best I've ever got on Vodafone in Whangarei on 3G is 1.6Mbit/sec, most of the time it is between 256Kbit and 1Mbit, and of course on GPRS it's dog slow, and I don't get 3G in a lot of places, or it keeps flipping between GPRS and 3G all the time as the 2100Mhz 3G signal is too weak so it has to fall back to 900Mhz GPRS.

Have you done any Vodafone vs Telecom comparisons out in the country ? I think a lot of people would be REALLY interested in the comparison out in the country between Telecom and Vodafone, in THEORY you should get 3G from Telecom even out in the wops as the 850Mhz signal travels much further than a 2100Mhz signal.

Another thing that would interest people is how good the 3G is in a high rise building, as again, 850Mhz penetrates building walls far better than 2100Mhz.

You say everything is working, but I assume that MMS is not as you have not filled in any MMS settings ? Have you asked the Telecom rep for MMS settings to see if that can be made to work as well ?

Also, have you tried to enable tethering ? It probably won't work at the moment as you need an ipcc (carrier settings file) that enables it...

PS it seems that the upload speed on Telecom is very slow though, is it that slow all the time ?

Yeah, don't know what happened to the upload speed test. I'll do another one now.

This is from the radio dead zone of my house. 174KB/sec down, 6.8KB/sec up.

Far out in the country as I get is Albany, I'll try Voda 3G/XT in Auckland CBD next week, give poor old Voda another try. But XT just seems way better all round.

Haven't sent an MMS yet. :)

No luck with data tethering on my XT Prepay, works on my Voda contract.

One more thing is iTunes didn't recognize the phone with the XT Sim in. Odd.

Hmmm, that's worrying....

What do you mean by iTunes not recognising it ? Do you mean it won't even show the iPhone in the left hand pane after it's plugged in ?
