Hey Phil

Great to hear you've got yourself an iPhone! Look forward to hearing what you think of it.

At the moment I'm thinking "this could be a really bad thing to have"....mainly because I can't put it down.

Had to help a friend set up his new Mac yesterday. First thing I did when I went around was activate wireless on his router even though he doesn't need it on...just so I could use my phone! Have decided after all the discussion to use an APN that does not let me connect to VFNZ...in other words, the staffer was wrong to say what they said, but I'm going to work like that at the moment. I don't need data of VFNZ's network at this stage and don't want to accidentally start paying for it.

Stayed up playing til 2am, went to bed, woke at 9 and checked email and RSS feeds for various sites and thought "I'll just have a quick nap"....next moment, it was 12 !! I blame iPhone fatigue!

Yeah, beware that the iPhone can become very addictive. I've found that with my iPod Touch. Also, due to the fact that my iPod can't connect to VF's networks anyway, I just use WiFi and haven't really ever had too much of a problem. I mostly just use it at home anyway, but I've found that if on holiday and in need of a hotspot there's always a few around.

Enjoy it...

Don't worry, you won't be able to resist the temptation for long, I give you a few days until you change the APN and come over to the dark side

By the way Vodafone sends a txt notification when you reach 8MB of your 10MB daily allowance, and you can also track your usage on the phone by looking in Settings -> General -> Usage, and scrolling down to Cellular Network Data.

First thing each day I press "Reset Statistics" so it counts from zero again so I can see how much of the 10MB I've used for that day.

Regards

We'll see...although I'm not sure why. I spend 95% of my waking hours around free wireless, so don't really need it. I'm even being cheeky and activating wireless at friends houses when they ask me to come and do tech support on their broadband setup...all password protected of course.

I was the same at the start where i was going to turn on and off cell data but i must admit that i keep it on from now on as i can use IM which works out to be if i text 5 times it then it costs me $1 however if i use IM i can IM as much as i want for $1 so it works out way cheaper for me to have data activated

Also i get to have all functions available to me at all times like Twinkle it just makes the iphone way more fun and useful

Is the iPhone 3G locked to Vodafone or not ? 1 Month ago
Hi to everyone. I recently bought an iPhone, two days ago to be exact, and just like what I've read in recent posts, the staff initially told me that I can't use some features of the iphone if I am just on prepay . I felt a bit disappointed knowing that that is their policy according to the salesperson. I left the store and came back and got to speak to a different salesperson, who sold me the iphone (let me add that that was the fastest NZ$1129 ever, within 5minutes, I was out of there). Before buying, the salesperson said that I can actually use the features as they have this new promo $1/10MB on prepay... that I don't have to do anything and I can just access the internet, etc.

Of course, too excited me didn't even bother to ask the exact steps I have to do to be able to do this.

Basically, I just want to be able to use the maps, browse the internet, weather and app store on prepay. Can anyone please tell me exactly how I can do this? And what's APN? I'm starting to get emotional about it as I am having such a difficult time finding a solution to this dilemma. I hope you guys could give some advice.

Sorry but just got to NZ and I am not aware of the different network settings you guys might have here.

Cheers!

Please see the vodafone forums related to this....the policy of this site is to not discuss these sorts of changes, given that Vodafone isn't prepared to support them officially.

I would also express caution with the apporaches...not because they don't work, but because they will impact your prepay bill. I folowed discussions on that site to block my phone from using data and to use a prepay, but didn't realise that it would pull data the non-3G way and still bill me a $1 a day.....so I have now completely removed all APN information to block the kind of activities you mention.

Which leads me to respond to DBMandrake's comment....

Don't worry, you won't be able to resist the temptation for long, I give you a few days until you change the APN and come over to the dark side

Umm...hate to disappoint, but over a month later I'm still more than happy to access those sorts of services from a wireless point rather than pay VFNZ data fees

Hi Phil,

Thank you for your quick response and I totally understand what you mean with not being able to discuss some issues here. Thank you for clarifying though! Will try and do more research, and not give up hope!

You'll find it very quickly on the VFNZ forums. Just note that they don't support it, so it's a "use at your own risk" sort of thing....which makes me feel they're being a little hypocritical by allowing others to mention it. But hey....at least they let you talk about it there
