Niftybean Productions is my contracting iPhone development company based in Wellington, New Zealand. We've been implementing iPhone project work for creative organizations and have also started to release our own apps into the App store.

Robert ClarkHere's a little background on me and how I got to be doing this. I could try and claim the start of my computing career began in the era of Nintendo Game & Watch and odd LED games like Merlin. But it's more likely it began when my parents sent me to several week-long computer camps. There I learned Logo on Apple ][, then Basic on BBC Micros and finally started a bit of Assembly. Dad bought us an Apple ][ clone and I can remember teaching my Whakatane Intermediate School classmates from Room 10 some Basic programming (and my teacher learned why I spelled "color" that way).

While studying Architecture at Auckland Uni I created the multiplayer Doom BBS called "Hades Creche" which was great fun. We had a stack of modems in the flat and had this "mammoth" 8-port RS-232 hardware controller allowing a pretty fluid 4-way gaming experience over a 14.4 modem. Awesome technology! But... it happened just as the Internet was taking flight and the first Quake demo came out and steamrolled us.

After getting a Comp Sci Degree I worked at several companies doing mostly java, web services, database and integration but kept my creative side satisfied with the odd bit of front-end design. This all changed in early 2009 after becoming infected learning about how great the iPhone and App store were/are - I couldn't resist and one weekend I jumped into it in earnest, not having owned an Apple for 15 years nor having written a line of Objective-C in my life.

Today Niftybean has had success working with creative companies in Wellington. We are also concentrating on releasing our own apps. Providing technical expertise to a creative company is a win-win equation - creative companies can source content and solutions to reach their iPhone/Touch audience and they don't need a development shop or coding team to get there. We like to keep it simple and work with a simple arrangement and hourly fee structure.

We're also shooting to be releasing a lot more into the app store in 2010. It's an exciting time to be writing iPhone software!
