Pixelthis is a casual game development studio based in Palmerston North, New Zealand. We've been creating unique games for our clients and our own portfolio on a wide range of platforms, but with a focus on mobile devices. Although we love the iPhone (and other iPlatforms), I'm almost embarrassed to admit that they are only one of the stable of mobile platforms we develop for.
My own development history started way back when the Commodore 64 was the greatest thing around, moving on to Amiga 500 and then eventually PC, Mac and the proliferation of mobile platforms. My heart and imagination was captured by the simpler games which didn’t have amazing graphics or flashy effects, so had to rely on great game play. The progression to mobile devices was natural – compared to desktops and consoles, mobile devices are also very limited in terms of graphics and other effects, and the focus is once again on game play.
Now, as well as a large stable of games which are distributed all around the world, we develop casual games for TV networks, creative agencies and businesses who are interested in reaching an audience that is moving away from traditional advertising media, such as TV. Where are these audiences spending their time? You guessed it – playing games. And what better demonstration of this than the explosive growth of gaming on the iPhone, which is almost single-handedly responsible for a 17% increase in mobile game downloads in the past year!
Sheepish, our pipe-based puzzle game, is our first iPhone title. Sheepish was featured by Apple as a staff favourite in May, and sales went through the roof for several weeks. Sadly sales have now returned to moderate levels, and we are back to experimenting different ways to increase our visibility – the bane of most iPhone developers. Rune Mage, the iPhone version of our very popular fantasy-themed mobile game, is next on the cards, and has a large and excited community following already.
We look forward to creating more quality and fresh content for the iPhone. We’ve adopted the platform as our favourite mobile platform (because it doesn’t have the issues that plague other platforms such as fragmentation, unfair revenue shares and more - stories for another day), and we look forward to the impending revolution of the entire mobile ecosystem!
