My main aim in getting an iPhone case is for protection as opposed to any modification of its look. So in that instance I’m after a clear iPhone 3G case that fits and protects the iPhone quite snuggly. The Crystal case appears to be one of the suitable options.
The slim packaging includes the casing and no instructions. However it is easy to sea how you slide the back portion of the case off, slide the iPhone in face down and then slide the casing back on. This latter part requires a little force (as it’s a very snug fit) so place your phone face down in the case on a firm but covered surface.
My first reaction to the case was that I wish the sliver lining that surrounds the touch screen area on the front wasn’t there. It doesn’t match the phone in any way and looks odd. However I believe that there is a black alternative that might be better.
After a few moments I was pleased with how things were going, but then noticed the case had popped open in one location. I think this was actually my fault in terms of how I put it on, so clicked it back into place and never experienced the issue again.
The casing has openings for the sleep/wake button at the top, a left-side opening for the volume and vibrate buttons, camera opening, headphone jack opening as well as one long opening at the bottom for charging and the speaker and microphone. On the face, there is an opening for the home button and top speaker for when using the phone.
The snugness of the fit suggests to me that dust is unlikely to find its way between the phone and the casing...but then, if it did, you’d just open up the case and clean it. Phone calls are no problems....my first call I received on the phone went perfectly...except for the fact it was a survey company so I wasn’t impressed.
Having this case on hinders the use of the Universal Dock from Toshcomputers (to be reviewed elsewhere) and the Apple 3G dock. I imagine the same would be said about Apple’s Universal Dock. Keep this in mind because I did find the case so snug that I really had to work at re-opening the case...so you wouldn’t want to be opening the case every day to put it in a dock. It does easily connect to a USB dock connector.
One thing I did discover however were some less-than-sensitive spots at the top of the touchscreen area. The top row of button on the home page took some pressing to get working. Sometimes, holding a thumb over a button and pressing rather firmly seemed to help, but there is a noticeable difference there between when the cover is on or off.
I was also surprised how quickly the cover got a little dirty or scratched....not badly...but just a little rough. Then again for less than $24, who cares! I would rather it was this case than my iPhone. And to its credit, a $49 case I bought off the Apple Store website (I will review also shortly) doesn’t even protect the face in any way.
All-in-all, the case is a good fit for the iPhone and fairly unobtrusive. I’d suggest getting the black interior version if it is available and I would also be a little concerned about the lack of sensitivity near the top of the screen. That said, this may just be an issue with the way I put the casing on?
