A simple compass application for iPhone and iPod Touch
Compass is a free, easy to use application that allows you to see which way north is. To use, lay the iPhone or iPod Touch flat on a surface in the sunlight, and place your finger in the middle of it, pointing down at a right angle to the iPhone or iPod Touch. Then rotate the iPhone/iPod Touch pivoting on your finger until the shadow cast from your finger lines up with the virtual white shadow on the device. Now the 'N' indicates north.
This app does not require internet access or a network to work. It just requires the sun.

This is a very clever, easy to use application, which comes with helpful, and simple instructions. Basically, it casts a virtual shadow, based on the time of day, and when you line that up with the sun, it points you to north.
Only problem is, especially with the weather this winter here in New Zealand, there hasn't really been much sun for a few weeks...
Overall though, great app, which works really well, just provided the sun is out.
