Kicking of a press conference with a YouTube clip ridiculing the iPhone antenna issue and people's response to it seemed out of place for Apple, but so did the whole press event (which can now be viewed here), where Apple did (and didn't) admit issues with the iPhone 4. They're not perfect and phones aren't perfect. They did admit there were issues and have offered some reparation to iPhone users (in the forum of free bumpers or refunds to those who have purchased a bumper already) but they fought back showing that this issue isn't only on their new phone and have indeed posted a section of their website about antenna issues (see http://www.apple.com/antenna/). Perhaps the most interesting snippet from these pages is the comment at the bottom of this page where it states that "Phone 4 was field-tested in nearly every possible coverage scenario across different vendor and carrier equipment all over the world". Does this mean the iPhone 4 visited New Zealand before its release!?

People reporting issues

An obviously defensive Jobs effectively said that the iPhone 4 did indeed have an antenna issue, but that all phones did, and showed videos of a Blackberry, HTC and Samsung also having the same issue. The response by Apple covered 3 areas and solutions...(1) That a software update had been released to report accurate cell signals. This is the 4.0.1 update that came out yesterday. (2) All iPhone 4 users can get (or get a refund if purchased) a free bumper to solve the issue up until September 30. This date will be re-examined at a later date, but because of demand they are also going to try and offer alternate cases. (3) Unsatisfied customers can get a full refund.

Dropped calls

Perhaps of interest also is the response to a question at the Q&A session afterwards. Courtesy of Mashable, the question and answer was...

Q: Will you change the design of the antenna in future iPhone models?
A: We've been preoccupied with this. The iPhone 4 is the best antenna in almost any way. If anything, we put the red flag in front of the bull with the "touch me here" antenna. I don't know what the next antenna design will be.

The issues with the proximity sensor were also acknowledged and Apple say they are working on this and hope to fix it with another software update.

Check out the iPhone 4 Antenna song, with the lyrics "The media loves a failure in a string of successes"...
