As an Adobe Education Leader and iPhone user, it was interesting to be at Adobe HQ a few months back and (within an NDA meeting) hear the subject of the iPhone come up. Now, being a Nondisclosure Agreement session, you might think that I learned something new about the saga that is Adobe Flash and the Apple iPhone. Think again. Yes, I learned lots of things about other stuff I can't tell you, but the response was as expected when it came to the iPhone. Nothing new was revealed about any plans, nor was anything said about the relationship between Apple and Adobe on the issue. Think "we're working on it", or "it would be great if it happened" and that's about as far as it went.
So it comes as no surprise tonight to see, with the announcement at Adobe Max about Flash 10.1, that the iPhone is not named nor considered as part of a major Flash announcement.
My personal take on this (given that I have responsibilities for a large Flash-based conferencing and delivery mechanism at my University) is one of continued frustration. I also expressed annoyance early on that the iPhone was being billed as having the Internet on the iPhone, when clearly aspects of the Internet were not present. In fact, in the UK, that advert was ruled to be misleading.
Whatever the issues are that have delayed the presence of Flash on the iPhone (and many of these are well documented or speculated); whatever the working relationship between Adobe and Apple may be...let's hope that we see, ultimately, some form of resolution that may appease everyone.
