Reports are starting to circulate around the internet of cracks appearing in some user's 3G iPhones. These are most notable on the white model iPhone although there are some reports of users with black iPhones having cracks also. The cracks are not related to users dropping or misusing the phones. Instead, it appears that the snug form factor of the iPhone is contributing to the issue, with the cracks being described as 'stress fractures. TUAW comment "It's pretty clear Apple has a manufacturing defect on its hands."

MacNN are also reporting the issue and have some images of the problem. Ars Technica have also picked up on the issue with the amusingly titled article "Hey iPhone 3G, your crack is showing!"

Oh dear!
And just when I'm thinking of getting a new iPhone. Well, I guess I'll have to hold off for a bit. So much for second revisions being better. It could however have something to do with the shipping of devices, and the temperature change in the process.

I wouldn't refer to the iPhone 3G as a revision, given that so much internally is new and the outside form factor is new also. To me, a revision would be iPhone version 1.1 or the next iteration of the 3G.

But...
That really doesn't make any sense. The iPhone 3G has been revised, for all the reasons you said.

In the land of Apple, revisions are not normally seen as changes in functionality, form or name. For example...I'm using a revision B iMac. Nothing has changed in name, functionality or form from the previous version....but inside, some of the specs have been updated from the previous model. I'd say there is no previous iPhone 3G...it's a whole new beast rather than a revision of an existing mode. The name, form and functionality are all new...not just revised.

I know were getting into semantics, but I guess I'm saying I see the iPhone and iPhone 3G as quite separate beast....not just something that got tweaked.
