Finding a decent Bible app can prove difficult, and trying to wade through the ocean of different Bible apps out there can be a bit of a trial. I know I spent a long time trying to find some that would actually do what you expected. Below is a brief rundown of the top Bible apps out there, and a fair few of their features. So if you've been hunting for a good Bible app, and haven't been having any luck, this is the article for you. Read on
Blue Letter Bible
Themes and slick page turning animations aren't the only things that this app offers. You can do everything from searching for a verse, which is fairly standard, to having the page scroll itself down, which isn't fairly standard. But, although there are an awful lot of features, they aren't layed out particularly well. I found them clumped and awkward to use, and the lack of words telling you exactly what each button does can lead to some frustrating times of trial and error. It seems a shame that an app with such potential can be bogged down with such an easy to fix problem, but that's not the only issue. While it comes with a few versions installed, getting new ones isn't particularly easy. Not an issue for me, I'm a KJV guy, but it could definitely pose a problem for a few people out there. The verse finding mechanics leave a bit to be desired too, with the app slowing down on me more than once. So, while there are some good features, the lousy interface will leave many users frustrated. 6/10
Pocketsword
Simple. That's the first word that comes to mind as I open this app. It doesn't do things you don't need it to do, but it does have most of the features that everyday users find useful. Note the word "most". It is missing a few seemingly obvious features like note taking and sharing. But the missing features fail to fully distract from this apps easy to operate interface, simplistic searching technique, and straightforward reading. And while it's missing features, it has some others don't, ie a verse by verse commentary and dictionary, both really useful. To it's detriment though, this app has crashed on me more than once, and it has also slowed down on a few occasions. These are simple things that could be fixed with an update, but for now, they're enough to bug me. 7.5/10
Youversion Bible
A combination of an easy to use interface, all the features you'll really need, and easy to download Bible versions make this the top of it's class. Not only does the menu bar allow easy access to the features you want, when you want them, it's easily customisable; much like the iPod app. Sharing verses you've found is as easy as tapping a verse, and then you can share by Twitter, Facebook, email, or SMS. You can have notes for each verse, sync them with your online account, and bookmark individual verses for later reading. There's an enormous amount of Bible versions in a myrid of languages, and more reading plans and devotionals than you'll know what to do with. It's a stable app, that doesn't try and woo you with unneeded features; it just has what you need. I really can't rave about it enough. 10/10
So that's that. While my comments may not be everyones, I can only speak from my experiences. Don't get me wrong, all these apps are good, but one has to be the best. And that title goes to Youversion, simply because... Well, simply because it's simple. And yet at the same time has everything you'll ever need. So if you're after a perfect Bible for your iPhone, get Youversion. You won't regret it, and you'll find yourself leaving your paper copy at home just because it's so simple with this app. But don't sit here listening to me ramble - download it!
