For those of you who don't know, there is a thing known as Jailbreaking. Jailbreaking, in a nutshell, allows you iDevice to run unsigned code. Basically, it will allow you to get Apps that Apple wouldn't allow on the App Store. While Apple's reasons for rejecting these Apps varies greatly, the result remains the same; Mainstream users are denied the ability to increase the functionality of their iHoodah. Read on for five of my favourite reasons to take the plunge and break free of Apples restrictions;
Reason 1: Infinifolders
Ever wondered why Apple would only let you put 12 apps in each folder? I'm afraid I can't answer that question, but I can help remove the reason for asking it. Enter Infinifolders, a brilliant Cydia tweak that allows more than 12 icons per folder. There is also the option of folders within folders, but I personally haven't tried it yet - I've hear it still needs a bit of tweaking. It's available in the Cydia store for $0.99
Reason 2: SBRotator
Something I thought was quite cool about the iPhone was the auto rotation of many apps. Something I didn't think was cool was the the Springboard (homescreen) didn't. The amount of times I got annoyed having to rotate the phone to see the Springboard properly... It's not worth going into. SBRotator allows you to set the Springboard to rotate with the phone, just like it always should've done. You can also set the amount of Apps per page, or have them laid out in iPad format. You can pick this up from the Cydia store for $1.99

Reason 3: Activator
One of the things that I feel has been missing from the iPhone are decent gesture controls. Sure, we've got pinch to zoom, but that's really it. I was expecting more. And that's where Activator stepped in and saved the day. Feel like being able to double click the home button to turn on the torch? No problem. How about pinching the Springboard to be open Angry Birds? Completely doable (is that a word?) if that's what turns you on. You can head to the Cydia store and get free of charge
Reason 4: SBSettings
Adjusting things like brightness can be a bit of a pain at times. As can turning Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and off. SBSettings takes away the pain of doing these tasks and makes it super simple. By setting up a gesture control using Activator, you can open a list of some basic settings, such as Brightness, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G, even turn Mobile Data on and off. This makes doing basic tasks much easier and quicker, and given that SBSettings is completely themeable (see below), it can add some extra pizaz to your iPhone. Grab this from the Cydia Store Pro Bono (That's free)
Reason 5: Winterboard
Now don't get me wrong, the iPhone interface is pretty. And slick. But the thing is, everyone with an iPhone has the same icons. Not only that, they all sound the same. This may not bother most people, but if you're a bit different, like me, you'll want you're phone to mirror your personality. Winterboard gives users the ability to install themes created by other users like yourself. Many of these themes have extra sounds as well, and can range from a simply custom locksreen theme, to a full-blown custom icon theme that changes the look of everything. Easy to use, and an absolute must have for anyone with a Jailbroken iPhone. Cydia has this listed ազատ (That's Armenian for "For free". Don't ask why I chose Armenian)
This is by no means a definitive list of brilliant Cydia Apps. There are literally thousands out there. I merely chose to share the five that I would recommend to anyone considering Jailbreaking their iThing. In the future I'll be doing another list of nifty tweaks and Apps available on the Cydia store, as well as a guide for those looking to Jailbreak their iPhones. Watch this space.

Jailbreaking sounds like something every person should do, i hate being dictated to by manufacturers. So since Apple deem it unworthy it doesn't get a slot in the app store. Will have to look into the jailbreak revolution. |
