As reported on their Geosoft Ltd website Navmii have released NavFree

According to their blurb:

The world's first FREE 'onboard' professional GPS navigation software, with turn-by-turn directions, voice guidance, auto-rerouting, live ‘Google’ Search, for the iPhone and iPad. The best GPS navigation software for the iPhone/iPad for FREE.

According to my blurb:

You will need to download this over WIFI, it is 180MB of maps etc. It handily covers both NZ and AU, and has a similar feel to other GPS systems out there. This is way more convenient than having to have a phone and a in car GPS device. The iPhone of course has a much better capacitive touchscreen than most GPS, and you also always have it with you so it's a no brainer to install this.

I'm not 100% sure about the mapping information, I've already seen a few holes. The street I was routing to was spelt funny and the route looked like one I wouldn't take normally (it even seemed to suggest doing a U-turn on a four lane road with a media barrier)?

Anyway you can't really argue with free, and I have now downloaded it for both my phone and iPad and will be trying it out over the next few days. They seem to include some kind of 'store' where you can buy premium services, but I haven't checked this out yet!

This was one of the last few things that I have been waiting on, and it was one of the main reasons people have been jail breaking their phones (ie to download a copy of the exorbitantly priced TomTom iPhone app).

I have seen some reviews of this app already that complain how bad it is, most likely because it uses OpenStreetMap, and open source alternative to Google Maps, which is maintained by us, therefore it relies on people to actually fix stuff as they come across it.
