Today is a great day. It's freezing cold outside, pouring with rain, and grey as a dead whale. So why is the day great? Well, today's great for many reasons. The first one being that this is the first in what I hope to be a long line of weekly articles bringing the latest iOS news together into one place. No longer will you have to hunt the world wide web in search of tid-bits of information. The information you get here will be as accurate as I can possibly make it, although we all know how difficult getting accurate rumours can be. Well, it's not even possible. That's why they're called rumours.
But not everything will be rumours. I'll also be making announcements about up and coming releases in both hard and software departments, and new reviews, as well as things I'd like to review. Software announcements will include everything from iOS news to the latest jailbreak.
Which brings me to the first point of today - a jailbreak for iPad 2 is in the work. Long have people wanted to jailbreak their precious iPad 2's, and long have they had to wait. Well, they've got to wait a little longer, and unfortunately, I can't really say how long that's going to be. But I can tell you that it is coming. It'll be done through Jailbreakme, which is by far the simplest method of hacking your iDevice. All you'll have to do is jump on your iPad 2, navigate to jailbreakme.com, and then swipe to jailbreak. No joking, it's that simple. And it's on its way.
Next up we've got iOS 5. Nothing really new here, we basically know most of what Apple will let us anyway. It's slated for a "fall release" which equates to spring over here in NZ. More than likely we'll end up with iOS 5 in September, since that's a favourite month for Apple to spring (no pun intended) things upon us. Add that to "numerous leaked confirmations of a September release date by Apple employees" and September is looking very grand indeed.
Which brings us to the big question: When is the iPhone 5 going to land? Well, there's been no announcements that I'm aware of, but it'll more than likely be around the same time as iOS 5. That's my opinion, anyway, and I know it's shared by many other people round the globe. I imagine the 5 will be shipping with iOS 5 preinstalled. As a matter of fact, I can almost guarantee that it will. So could we be seeing the new iPhone in September? Well, it's a very real possibilty.
And how about the iPad 3? There hasn't been an enormous amount of news surrounding this, but rumour has it we'll be seeing them before Christmas, which'll really ruin my day seeing as I just ordered the iPad 2. Unfortunately, rumour also has it there won't be an iPad 3. Not sure where that rumour's coming from, personally. I imagine we'll be seeing the iPad 3 in the not too distant future, but I sincerely doubt it'll be dropping this year. It's more than likely to hit the ground around the April-May region of next year, giving the iPad 2 plenty of time to work it's magic. I mean, people are still waiting for their iPad 2 models, so I really don't see Apple sending out the 3 this soon. Who knows though, maybe they'll surprise us.
Next up is more in the jailbreaking department. iOS 5 has already been released to developers, meaning that many hackers have early access to it. And it's already been jailbroken. Yep, you read that right. It was jailbroken within a day or two of it's release, actually. It's still tethered, meaning every time your re-boot or -spring your iDevice you'll need to be connected to a computer to re-jailbreak, but it's definitely better than nothing. Hackers are already hard at work building on Apple's upgrades, adding a new version of the much loved SBSettings app as a widget in the notifications centre. So taking that in mind, it's entirely likely that we'll be able to jailbreak our iPhones within weeks of iOS 5's official public release. Now isn't that exciting?
Why else is it a great day today, you may ask? Well, my iPad 2 is on the way, and once that arrives you'll be seeing a lot more iPad app and hardware reviews. First up we'll have some brilliant cases from iFrogz, as well as some of the best apps and games for the iPad 2. Be sure to let us know your favourite case or app, and we'll do our best to get a hold of it and feature it on the site.
So there we have it - a turbo roundup of the latest news and rumours. Mostly rumours today, I'm afraid to say, but check in next Thursday; we may have something a bit more solid than just rumours. And don't forget to make your submissions for our "Benchmark song competition". You can post all your ideas on our Facebook page, and if your ideas get picked, you'll win a prize. It won't be a car or anything, but it will be cool. So get posting!
