Let's say it as it is; the iPhone 4 is a beautiful thing. It's slim, it's stylish, and it's just flipping pretty. But certain factors in it's design almost demand that we cover up all the beautiful metal and glass with a cover of some sort. None of us want to have our thousand dollar phones dashed to pieces on the ground or torn to shreds in the destructive wasteland of the pocket. So we buy a case, and the options are almost endless. Fat, thin, colourful, one piece, two piece, plastic, steel, carbon fiber... Need I go on? But not matter what case we buy, we want it to have almost the same amount of bling that our iPhone's have, and we don't
want to end up with a brick. On top of that, it has to actually do its job; protecting your iPhone. A case isn't any good if it just sits there looking pretty and smashes to pieces at the first sign of strain.
Enter the Luxe Ascend. A fairly new case from iFrogz, this hard plastic two piece delivers in both style and form factor without sacrificing protection. Read on for the break down.
We'll start off with size - or lack of it, in this case. It'll only slightly increase the bulk of your iPhone, bringing the front-to-back measurement of your phone to a mere 1.3 inches. The reason for the increased bulk is a slightly raised lip coming up the sides of the screen, saving your precious display from scratches. Access to all the ports and buttons is easy, since there's holes cut for all of them. The headphone jack is easy to access, but more importantly than that, it's plenty big enough for even the fattest headphones to fit. I'd gamble that the reason for that would be the fact that iFrogz also makes headphones, some of which don't have super slim cables. No matter the reason, it's a nice touch.
Installing the case is a piece of pie. It's got fabric (possibly silk?) lining on the inside to prevent scratching, and the two pieces slide easily over the phone. The fit is tight enough to grip, while remaining loose enough to not be a hassle to remove. Why a two piece case, you may ask? Well, there's a few reasons for that. The first reason is style, since you can have two colours - in my case, black and blue. The second, and I'd argue more important, reason is accessability. Let me explain; most cases are not dock compatible, meaning you have to remove the entire case simply to dock your iPhone. This case is slim enough to fit onto most docks, but on the off chance it does, you simply remove the lower portion of the case. This makes docking a heck of a lot easier, and makes the case that much more desirable.
Style is definitely a bonus here as well, since the case is a sure fire head turner. As a matter of fact, within two days of putting the case on, I had more than one person ask me where they could get one. More than two, actaully. A lot more.
And then comes the overall feel of the case. It's made of a hard plastic, but it doesn't feel like plastic. iFrogz has their "Luxe" range of cases, which this is a part of, and those cases all have a very satiny feel to them. This makes your case just feel... expensive, I guess the word is. You don't feel like your holding a plastic shell, that's for sure.
And protection? Well, it isn't going to provide the same level of protection as cases such as the Survivor or BullFrogz, but it will protect from the odd knock. If I were you, I wouldn't drop it onto concrete, but I've got a feeling it would be ok, depending on the height, of course. Just add your favourite brand of screen protector, and you're ready to handle the average day. But if you do feel your phone is going to take more than your average beating, this may not be your best bet.
Overall, here's what you've got; A stylish case that gives you a moderate level of protection without beefing up your iPhone. It'll protect your iPhone from the average day, but if you feel you may be bumping your iPhone a bit more than the average user, you may need something a bit stronger than what this can provide. But if you don't plan on too much of a beating, and just want something spiffy and easy to use, this is perfect. Nuff said.
