Answer

For an understanding of what tethering is, please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tethering

Launch the Settings application...

Settings

Go to "General" > "Network". The fourth option is "Set Up Internet Tethering". Tap this.

Network settings

Set the slider to "On" and you're done using the "Settings" application

Tethering settings

Note that you need to have a SIM card that has a data plan associated with it, otherwise you'll get this message...

Incorrect SIM

When tethering is working you'll see a blue bar at the top of the screen like so...

Working

On a Mac, connect the iPhone to the Mac (one way to do this, is using the cable that came with the iPhone) and then open (on the Mac) "Network" in "System Preferences", which you can access from the Apple menu at the top-left of your Mac. It should say it has found a new network connection. Note that this is the same for USB and Bluetooth connections.

Turn off any other network connection (i.e. Airport, ethernet, etc) on the Mac and you should still be able to connect to the internet through your iPhone.

According to a note that I just saw posted on the VFNZ forums by Vodafone, USB tethering on a Mac is only compatible with Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 or Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 or later.

Can the iphone 3G be tethered to a PC? I am on Vodafone and this would be good to do sometimes, to get the 3G internet into my laptop.
