TrafficCamNZ displays web image urls. It was built to display images generated by traffic cameras and can display any available static web image.

Images you choose as "Featured" are downloaded and are setup side by side so that you can swipe across the screen to view multiple images quickly. You can also scroll vertically through every camera url stored. The application comes pre-configured with the New Zealand traffic cameras for Wellington, Auckland, and Christchurch.

An update to the camera list is performed when you first run it to load hundreds more cameras from around the world. You can choose which cameras are the "featured" ones.

Application notes:

  • Pictures are displayed in the order they are received so the image arrangement may be different every time you run the application or refresh

  • You will be downloading pictures over your a WiFi or 3C connection - they may be large - you should monitor your network traffic usage

  • Images are not cached, if you recieve an image that isn't right (i.e. daylight when you know it is night time, it may be that the camera is not functioning)

  • Sometimes the traffic camera pictures are not up-to-date on the internet. You may see night puictures when it is supposed to be daylight or perhaps pictures don't change. TrafficCamNZ has no control over that.

Features:

  • Flick through the loaded images with your finger

  • Full screen image display for one image with pinch/zoom

  • Load your own web images by specifying a World Wide Web URL, and test before saving

  • Free version available, loads up to 3 images

  • Full version available, loads up to 19 images

  • Choose your own list of images to display up to the application limit

  • Comes loaded with Traffic Cameras for New Zealand and other cameras around the world) with selected cameras displayed. Edit the preferences to turn on the display or turn off the display of the pre-loaded cameras. Remember you cannot display more than three at any one time with the free version.

  • Allows XML import of camera list

  • Camera list (XML Import file) can be updated from a web site - doesn't require the release of a new application

I used to use MultiCam Wellington for this but when David Wilson joined NZiPhone I decided it was a good idea to check out his offering.

You know what, I think he's done a massive disservice by calling this app TrafficCam NZ. Not only does this app not just limit itself to New Zealand traffic cams it doesn't just limit itself to traffic cams providing some really amazing camera locations from around the world.

The app is very simple to use for the most part but it is kind of let down when selecting cameras to view. You have this unbelievably long list of cameras from around the world but to turn them off or on you then have to click on the camera and then slide the switch to turn it off and on. It would be nice to just have the slider in the list but that's the only issue I have with this app. The usage of the app post configuration is perfectly simple. It's just a matter of sliding between each screen with the swipe. It can't be easier than that.

Traffic Cam NZ uses standard XML so it's possible to create your own XML file to add your own cameras to the list and upload that or you can manually add the camera to the list within the application itself. To be honest it's probably just as easy to do that because the existing list is just so good that a handful of cameras you want to add doesn't seem to warrant rewriting the XML file. The XML file is updated reasonably often and the app asks whether or not you want to download the updated file.

Image quality is only as good as the images supplied but it pulls down these images reasonably quickly even over 3G. It would be nice to have an automatic refresh option but it's not a biggie.

There's not a lot more you can say about an app like this. What it does it does really really well. The only issues I have are minor UI features that don't really affect the way the app works. If you need a webcam viewer then I well recommend splashing out the miniscule $1.29 (as of writing) and getting this app.
