I was slightly confused by the announcement that a Drop Box app had been released for free today. As far as I was concerned, I already had Drop Box on my iPhone...but in fact, I had the web app version and had forgotten that.

Drop Box (http://www.getdropbox.com/) is a superb application/service that I have been using for 18 months at least now. I have it installed on my Mac at home and at work, but also have it installed on the Windows side of those machines. I'm only using the free 2Gb account, but you can easily upgrade to a paying account for more storage space.

Whilst I wouldn't recommend it for backups, I would for files that you want to use in various locations. For example, until recently (with changes that Snow Leopard brought about) I would drop files into it that I wanted to use in Windows, then reboot my Mac. I also have files that I am working on for this site and NZMac.com, meaning I can work on them at home, then when I get to work, do a bit more work. The cool thing is that each time you make changes (such as save a text file) it uploads the new version to your drop box folder. I don't drop hug files into my Drop Box folder (like OS updates etc) and use my thumb drive for this still....but it's superb for small one-off files that I want to flick around the place.

The iPhone app that came out today brings in very easy access to these files. In a very nice touch, the moment you install the app, it drops an introductory PDF into your drop box folder...meaning you can refer to it at any time in the future to understand the iPhone app and functionality.

It's also a superb way of showing images to anyone when you have your phone handy...but keep in mind that these photos have to download when you want to view them....they aren't stored on the phone but on Drop Box. But just drop any images you want to show (or access) into your "Photos" folder, they get uploaded into Drop Box and then they are accessible from your Mac, PC, iPhone and the web.

There's also a very clever "Public" folder, where you can store files that you want to make accessible to others. Just drop the files into this public folder and Drop Box will create specific links to these files that you can send out to anyone you want....a superb way of making files available to people from your machine to someone else...and not have to be online or connected after the upload to Drop Box has occurred...so they can get the files any time. It's FTP handled superbly and simply.

I've never had any issues with Drop Box and it's great that the service now moves from your Mac/PC desktop to the iPhone in a superb and easy to use way. Sign up to Drop Box now and get the app....you won't regret it.
